Me v. Nature
Posted on 22 Jun 2010 under Random, XLRI
About 20 minutes ago, it started raining. You may remember some of my previous posts about rain in Jamshedpur, but today I have been defied. It is pouring heavily, accompanied by violent explosions of thunder and continuous flashes of lightning. I love it.
Weather like this, particularly in summer, gets everyone (almost) in India high. Or at least, it does get me high. I cranked up the volume to hear the music (which plays almost continuously now that I have no room-mate to disturb with my taste in music!). But the rain became harder, the thunder more frequent. The wind picked up, banging doors shut, and the thunderclaps sounded like gunshots in the sky.
Obstinately, I turned up the volume even more. But I think God was in a competitive mood today. The rainfall became even denser, lightning flashing every few seconds. The thunder became adamant, a continuous rumble in the near distance, punctuated every so often by an explosive roar.
I gave up. I hit the pause button and started listening to the sounds of Nature’s gentle fury. Lesson learnt. Man is no match for nature or God.

Thanks for reading and commenting.
It is a bit off topic comment, I just remember a rain about 5 years ago. I was in the army on duty, it was night and I have to spend 5 hours on the rain. I remember that I was soaked pretty badly and it was early Spring. Remember that my machine gun get rusty immediately. It was surprised that I didn’t catch a cold. What can I say, we can’t fight with the nature.
I love heavy rain; watching from the warmth of my room. It cleanses the streets. It’s like a deafening “Shhhhh” to all, calming, soothing, slowing the world, if only for a short time to catch its breath before it dries and speeds up again.
