Another Toast to Social Networking Websites
Posted on 03 Mar 2008 under Humour
I’ve despised social networking sites for quite some time now… come to think of it, I’ve despised society for quite some time now, but before I go off on a tangential rant about that, let me restrict myself to ONLINE societies.
Dear facebookers, orkutters and just about anybody else who is sad enough to wear such a tag with pride,
- Thank you for inviting me to join a million social networking websites. I know that unless I have the same people on my friends’ list on a few hundred social networking websites, they don’t count as friends, irrespective of whether we hang out everyday or not.
- Thank you for making me feel unique when you send me heart-warming greetings every now and then. I used to make it a point to reply to every nice scrap I got till I got confused by the “CLICK HERE TO SCRAP ALL YOUR FRIENDS AT ONCE” link at the bottom of your messages.
- Thank you for inviting me to join your communities 47 times. I know I didn’t accept your invitation the first 46 times, but now I realize how important your community is to me, and how much it would enhance my life.
- And while we’re at it, I would also like to thank all sorts of social networking websites that have made it so easy to sign up. I KNOW I don’t remember ever signing up for gazzag.com, yet I got plenty of mails that people have been sending me Private Messages. Out of curiosity one day, I clicked the link in one of them, and lo and behold! Turns out I did have an account there after all!
(Actually, no, turns out this particular website makes it so easy to sign up that the moment you click on the link in their email, it creates an account for you!)
In celebration of social networking sites, I’ve decided to dedicate this day of my life to them! Three cheers for facezagkut!

Haha. Brilliant post.
Social networking communities have really become a pain in the ass now. I’ve never checked my Orkut mail. All it has are invitations to join different kinds of weirdo communities. i have more than 2000 unread messages in my orkut inbox right now.
my facebook account was deleted due to some mysterious reason, and honestly, i don’t care. Applications piss me off anyway. and now the most decent of all social networking sites, orkut, is adding applications.
brillaint, isn’t it?
I don’t whole heartedly agree with you. To quite an extent they are annoying, but on the other hand, we use Facebook very effectively to communicate about upcoming evects. For example, our clubs, our honor society, the senior class president all use these to tell us about events, or certain things we have to complete.
But i do agree, they are getting a little out of hand. You should just have people who take it seriously! And im surprised you didn’t mention myspace!
I don’t use myspace regularly, but it’s more annoying than any other social networking website. Overloaded and overdone pages, people with either a sick sense of humour or a terribly bad sense of web design, etc. — myspace has it all.
I do think myspace is the worse one of all because it is so cluttered and full of junk ads. However, a lot of musicians use them to keep fans updated with upcoming shows, etc. I do like using it to find new music and keeping posted with my favorite musicians.
Chris, I do agree with you. I’ve also noticed that most musicians’ profiles on MySpace aren’t too shabby or cluttered either. I guess that has something to do with the willingness to either employ or take help from someone who has some knowledge about webdesign.
