Its a lurking mentality in the previous generation which is diminishing at a rapid rate now especially amongst the high and upper middle class. But since these two categories consist only a fraction of the Indian population, we still have a long way to go before gender equality can be accomplished fully!!!

You're right. I find the Saas-Bahu serials offensive to women as well. Notice how a perfect wife in any of those serials is a perfectly devoted housewife. In fact, there is one serial in which a dark-coloured woman has trouble finding a husband because of her skin tone!

Gender equality has always been a problem in India. In fact in some of the occasions the situation is so worse that they don't even let their female child to breathe, literally. Well, I guess in India, males will continue to have a psychological edge over women, unless this subject of gender equality is taken very seriously.

The other day, my dad was telling me that half of India's strength is being wasted because of this, the allegiant Indian housewives have nothing better to do than to watch those rubbish saans-bahu sagas that are aired on the idiot box only to pollute their minds. Well, if they'd be put to some progressive work instead, it'd be a great giving to the society.
