Exit:Nairobi, Enter:Hyderabad

Posted on 26 Jun 2007 under Journal/Life Updates

The journey back home was in quite a few ways different to the one away from home. This time, the first leg of the flight (from Nairobi to Mumbai) was more or less on time, but the flight from Mumbai to Hyderabad was delayed a bit. The check-in, emigration, security check, etc were strict in Kenya, and I had to put my wonderful MP3 player inside the luggage because apparently, they don’t allow us to carry batteries. BAH! They even made me take off my shoes and got them re-scanned (my brand new Bata shoes!). The lady at the check-in counter even measured the weight of one our handbags to make sure it was not more than 8 kg.

The cabin crew were polite and helpful (as expected in the international leg of the journey), but surprisingly, the crew on the domestic flight were extremely polite too. I had placed a bag in such a way in the cabin baggage hold area that the lid wouldn’t have closed, but I didn’t have any other choice as all the other areas seemed to be filled. The stewardess who asked about the bag was sympathetic and helped me find a place for the bag too. There was also a cute little girl (she was 11, but she looked 13-14) who drew my admiration for travelling all alone all the way from the US to here. If I remember right, I think her name was Eshana.

The luggage claim in Hyderabad was a pain in the posterior, as our suitcases were in one of the last crates to be off-loaded from the aircraft and took a long time coming. It was even more ironic because I managed to rush the three of us quite quickly and efficiently through the immigration and stuff (all the things that have to be done before the baggage claim).

One of the things that I noticed what that there was plenty of turbulence that we faced on the Nairobi-Mumbai stretch, and surprisingly, some amount of turbulence even on the Mumbai-Hyderabad stretch. In fact, the plane was rocking (rocking as in swaying, not rocking as in “dat prty ws sooo rockin man. i luvd it.”) so much that even though I’m sitting completely still right now, I feel as if my body is gently swaying somehow right now.

  1. row row row your boat…gently down the stream…merrily merrily, life is just a dream… lol… i think boats sway as well :P

  2. so do trains for that matter.

  3. Trains? Sway? :o - I forgot, there aren’t any *real* train services here..we only have the subway :(.

Planes and sway makes more sense..esp if the plane is small :D.

  4. Had a wonderful trip, I assume?? When’s college ?

  5. Yunheng, the trains in India sway… MAJOR!

Vijay, yes it was a good trip. College started this monday. I missed about 2-3 days of it already, went today though.

  6. Welcome back bro :D
The Indian immigration has improved like hell overtime, and as for your baggage problem I expected that, because your baggages must be one of the first ones to be loaded, via inter-flight transfer.

And as for trains swaying, all the trains round the globe sway (by that I mean trains running on 2 tracks like we have here). The ones in Singapore are mono-rail trains which can’t sway.

  7. Yeah (for both counts).
Also, I think Singapore has a bullet train as well? I don’t think those sway either.

  8. Sometimes I wonder why people want to travel abroad. The whole experience of airports and having to hand over paperwork, getting luggage checked etc is just so much of a hassle for me. It’s not exactly what I want from a “relaxing” holiday.

  9. Well, it’s a 2-day experience at the airport, but you get to spend a much higher number of days in a new place or with loved ones. :)
