“Wow”.

Posted on 08 Feb 2007 under Random

If you haven’t already hazarded a guess as to what this post is about, I’ll take a wild guess and say you’re not a computer geek. Vista, Windows Vista. The “wow” starts now, apparently. No, I’m not going to review Vista (I’m quite happy with my 512MB RAM Windows XP, and don’t plan on upgrading for a while, thank you very much). But if you’re a regular reader of my blog, you’ve probably read a previous entry on bad advertising, and now you can probably guess what this is post is about :D .

OK, so the concept isn’t such a bad idea… “Every once in a while you see something so magnificent and new that you just say wow.” That was the line used in this TV ad, which is actually quite good… but there’s such a thing as carrying a concept too far. Especially when you take one word and repeatedly hit the consumer with it, which in this case, is “wow”… for example, link – this one speaks for itself.

There was also an advert in The Times Of India… an entire page in colour, using the word “wow” not less than 6-7 times on a page with more pictures than text. One of my favourite lines was “So buy the new Windows Vista and get the wow you’ve been looking for”… now don’t get me wrong, but how can you get a “wow”? And how long does it last for? I mean, let’s take a look at what Chambers Dictionary says about “wow”:

wow1 colloq exclamation (also wowee) — an exclamation of astonishment, admiration or wonder. noun a huge success.
verb (wowed, wowing) — to impress or amaze hugely.

Oh well, nevermind… I guess I’ll just get used to good concepts being presented in a not-so-impressive manner.

  1. As soon as I read the title, I thought it had to do with Vista, and was also thinking why the hell u talking abt Vista :P

But anyways, you have hit the nail on the head, with the Vista WOW campaign. They are overdoing the so powerfull word “WOW” and making it loose its value.

And as far as my Vista stint is concerened, wont do it until I get it installed on a few of my friends PCs or better use the Corporate mantra Wait till SP1, which as it is expected by Novemeber, and hopefully by then I will have a NEW RIG.

  2. I doubt I’ll upgrade even after SP1… unless I do some major upgrades of my RAM as well as processor and maybe also video card, I don’t see a point in upgrading to Vista.

  3. I’m with you on this one – I certainly won’t be upgrading any time soon. I really don’t see the point in upgrading to a high-powered PC if you’re just going to slow it down with a fat operating system. Sure, it looks nice, but unless you can afford to really overhaull your PC, your old, ugly WinXP will have to do!

  4. But WinXP isn’t really all that bad or old or ugly… it handles most of my tasks well enough to keep me happy :)
(However, this is coming from a guy who had to survive on Win98 and Win2k till not more than a few months back :P )

  5. Thats why i just use linux…

  6. Well, all this talk about how Linux is superior, and crap… in the end, for an average home user like me, Windows is the best… all softwares are compatible, and it’s easy to use, ain’t it?

  7. Im with Blaster. That is why I used linux.
