No more valid CSS.

Posted on 05 Nov 2006 under Site Designing

The W3C CSS validator does not support opacity in CSS, even though browsers like Safari and Firefox have been supporting it since 2004 (Opera too, started supporting opacity later that year, apparently). Internet Explorer (like always) plays spoilsport. So you need to make something called a filter apparently and then use the opacity tag. Anyway, the point is that W3C doesn’t vaildate your CSS if you use opacity, which is a shame because transparency effects can be really neat.

The PostRatings plugin I recently installed uses Opacity (which gives it that neat temporary disappearing effect when you’ve just submitted your vote), and consequently, the CSS does not validate anymore. So, a decision had to be made… Valid CSS (as a consequence of which the PostRatings doesn’t work on IE) or PostRatings plugin working on all browsers? hmm… Google Analytics shows that 13.46% of all my page views were from IE users. cPanel’s Awstats tells me that 21.1% of people viewing my website in general use IE. For the sake of these unfortunate souls, I think I’m going to chuck CSS validation out of the window (for now). I have a feeling that W3C will validate opacity sooner or later, though… let’s see…

  1. i dnt see how IE changes anything. Right now im using IE.. cant see the diff.

  2. Ah.Forever in search of popularity.
    G’luck :)

  3. @King, you won’t notice any difference on IE now because I haven’t removed the IE-specific code.

  4. Well dude did you try IE7. Because I think many CSS updates have been made to IE7.

And by the stats you are showing the amount of IE visitors are negligible and can be ignored. So get back to what you like Valid CSS ;)

  5. But I for one has not put in those codes (if your talking about the ones they tell you to add in the readme.) but i just rated my articles, doesn’t make a difference at all. Not that I can see it. Could it be that it’s coz my background is black?

  6. The IE-specific codes are already included in the stylesheet of the plugin… I was just messing around when I noticed it. If you haven’t changed any actual plugin files, then the filters code for IE is already present… your ratings should work fine on IE.

  7. What an excellent description! I have no clue how you were able to say this post..it’d take me weeks. Well worth it though, I’d suspect. Have you considered selling banners on your website?
