Everything at once…

Posted on 21 Aug 2006 under College, Journal/Life Updates, Life

Yes, everything bad happens all at once. Right up till today, college was bad enough… None of the subjects I have this semester are particularly interesting to me, none of the lecturers are bang-on amazing (one or two of them are really good, though… and also, to be fair to life, none of them are very bad or horrible), I’ve had to continually debate with myself whether to continue having problems with the injustice of the college management system and be a rebel or to finally “grow up”, get into the stream and start treating college like a metaphor for life, and instead of complaining, try to come out ahead any way I can. Dad says that life isn’t easy, and if I keep throwing tantrums at stuff that happens in college, I’ll have problems with any job I take up. On the other hand, accepting every bullshit rule without any sign of protest makes me feel like I don’t have a spine, I don’t have ethics, and I’ve finally become a zombie shackled by society’s rules. Life is a rat race, I know… but even if I do win it, I’m still a rat.

Anyway, back to describing how everything is going wrong. I’ve got internal exams starting this Thursday, and I’m feeling frustrated at the levels of my preparation, at how we’re expected to write class tests and complete assignments for subjects in which we aren’t going to write the internals for before the intra-semester break. (For non-GNEC students reading this blog*, we have 3 internal tests this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, then a 15-day break, and then the last 3 subjects’ tests when we come back to college). Add to that the almost comical effort the management is putting in to improve college discipline. Though the stories streaming in from other branches about strip-searching (slight exaggeration) boys for cell-phones have decreased slightly, there’s still quite a bit of tension about the way we dress, etc etc. It’s like they’re trying to make a military college… no answering your superiors and accepting everything they say or make you do with a jolly “SIR, YESSIR!”… It’s no wonder that the only thing I enjoy about college is the 3 hours of driving to and from college, where I get to sit quietly in the bus, with my life-saving MP3 player, and listen to good music… good music.

But today was the final straw. They’ve been collecting money to install a radio/tape player in the bus, and thankfully, it’s been getting delayed for the last few days… but the inevitable has finally happened. They finally got one installed over the weekend, and this morning, I was greeted in the bus by extremely loud, annoying Telugu music. YAY! Unfortunately, I lost it right then and there, and screamed to get the volume low enough for me to be able to hear the person I was talking to. Fortunately, in the morning, nobody was in much of a mood to listen to music, and after a short period of torture, we had no “music” streaming out from the infernal low-quality device. But in the evening, it all started again… and it was mostly (if not exclusively) telugu… oh joy. It killed my ride home. The fidelity of my MP3 player took a beating (it’s generally pretty good, when coupled with my new earphones), and it sucks. The one joyous aspect of college has now been invaded by mass “music” and senseless drum-banging, plagiarized tunes and utter nonsense in the name of melody. Hallelujah! Life is great.

  1. That sounds like my bus with the radio. They play the worst possible music there is. so i just sit there with my mp3 player up load drowning out everyone and dont’ really care what people have to say. Oh well good luck to you. And no you didn’t force me to read it i did it out of joy :D

  2. Well yes I do read your blog, but the thing is whenever you write a new post I am there online for and you force me to read it.

But at other times when I really come to your blog without you forcing me THERE IS NO NEW POST!!!

  3. I read your blog. :D. PRetty good one 2.
To be honest, that’s something different here in US. I mean they really can’t make you dress a certain way in college. Even school there are rules but no one enforces them. OBviously extreme nudity isnt allowed, not because of college/school rules, but because of the law.
I mean you have the right to what you wear. You are over 18 and your an adult. The law gives you the right to do whatever you want to without breaking the law. Take that and shove it in their faces. :D And the same thing goes for the music, your being made to listen to that music, violating your rights so badly.
But i guess they dont listen. So Good luck with that. And all the best for the tests.

  4. Hey gurdit, not bad…not bad at all.
I thought Shrew and I were the only witty/good english speaking/intelligent people in this city. Not that I’m necessarily complimenting you, but, you’re getting there my friend, you are getting there. take care and please fill me in on how your esteemed class mates are.

  6. Interesting… people do read my blog after all, huh?

@Sahil, welcome to India, mate… welcome to India. Anyway, something happened in the bus today… We played Puddle Of Mudd for a few minutes at a volume loud enough for us to be able to hear it where I was sitting. Well, the TDP at the back (TDP actually stands for Telugu Desam Party, a local party that aims to appease the local telugu population… but we call the guys who sit at the back the TDP gang because their entire lives seem to revolve around their telugu… they don’t like the western culture unless it’s in the telugu movies, and they don’t… well, just read the next blog entry ;) )

@Mythili, thanks for the “compliment”… how did you know I have a blog?

  7. hey…that’s sad situation…but i’ve been worse…telugu music in the bus?? oh man….people bothring you abt the way u dress?? i’d like those lecturers to get a glimpse of you in your shorts….and nothing else, mind you……

  8. ………..???

    O….k
I’m pretty sure that’ll shock the hell out of them :P

  9. […] Remember my last ranty post about having to bear bad music? Well, imagine a similar scenario, except that now it’s right outside my house! So I’m inside my house, calmly playing Civilization IV on my PC while listening to songs that repeated say “Dumma Re Dumma Re Dumma Dumma Dum Dum” (yes, that’s the chorus of a real Telugu song. Gimme a couple of days and I’ll update this post with the name of the movie it’s from), and “Ninne Ninne Ninne Ninne Ninne” (Yes, that’s the chorus of another Telugu song. I’ll try to find out the name of that movie for you too). Oh well… To all those of you who prefer not to complain and just enjoy the festival as/how you can, Happy Sankranti. 10. Hi Gurdit,
It felt good to go through your blog. Period.

But there were a few typos i.e “my levels of preparation”.
It should have been “the levels of my preparation”.
Secondly, you seem to harbor a few negative feelings towards the Telugu community. Is there a specific reason for that tirade which we had to go through in your blog? Blogging is a joyous experience, please do not corrupt it!
    Regards
    and take care.

  11. Hi Srinivasa,
I’ll fix up the typo right away, thanks for noticing it.

As for the anti-Telugu feelings you perceive, really, there is no such thing. I don’t much like Telugu music, though, and I’m just being honest about that fact. At the same time, I could mention that I don’t much like Hindi music either, but I dislike the “mass” kind of Telugu music a tad bit more than Hindi music. (And also, that particular day in the bus, it was Telugu music that welcomed me, not Hindi :) )

I apologize if I made it appear as if I harbour negative feelings towards any particular community, because I don’t really. I was just being honest there, and if you read some of my other posts, you will notice that I really have nothing against any one community in particular. I try to be as objective with my opinions as I can. Nevertheless, thank you for bringing it up.
